Michael McCall

Michael originally hails from Glasgow, Scotland, but spent his formative years in Western Australia. He is an English graduate of Curtin University (1997) as well as a NIDA acting course graduate (2001). In 2008, he completed Honours in Performance Studies, looking at the role media plays for emerging playwrights, again at Curtin. He is presently undertaking an MA in film and television directing and screenwriting at the WA Screen Academy.

Working primarily in theatre since 2002, his directing credits include: the WA premiere of Neil LaBute’s The Mercy Seat (2008), at His Majesty’s Theatre; the Australian premiere of Conor McPherson’s The Good Thief (Flaming Locomotive) at the Blue Room in 2007; Adelaide Fringe in 2008 and the Sydney premiere of Michael Gurr’s Crazy Brave (TRS @ Old Fitzroy), both of which he helped produce; Three residencies at Hayman Theatre Company - Cosi in 2003, an adaptation of A Doll’s House in 2006 with Tony Nicholls, and Richard III in 2008) At French Woods Festival in New York, Michael has had the opportunity to direct youth productions of Honour, Airborne, Hurry, Lee Hall’s Pinocchio, Women of Troy, Time Flies, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Dancing at Lughnasa, Three Sisters, Twelve Angry Men, Diary of Anne Frank, The Seagull, Annie and Little Dahlings, for which he also wrote the libretto.

Acting credits include the Jim Sharman directed What the Butler Saw (Company B Belvoir), the title role in Macbeth (Class Act) and Ghost Train (Barking Gecko). Film and television acting credits include Roll (SBS), The Shark Net (ABCTV) and the award winning short films, La Serena and Before Closing. In 2008, he was seen in Blood in the Sand (ABCTV), directed by Rowan Woods and All To Themselves (Finalist, Bondi Shorts Festival), directed by Zak Hilditch.

Michael works variously as a drama educator for universities, schools, acting agents, theatre companies from Perth to Sydney to New York. In 2007, he was the director of the Majkidz Youth Programme for Barking Gecko at His Majesty’s Theatre.

Michael has been a member of Actors Equity since 2001 and the Australian Writers Guild since 2008.
