Bernadette Young

Bernadette Young presents the Afternoon program on 720 ABC Perth from 1 - 3pm daily. Her program dissects, reflects and discusses a diverse range of issues from personal and family topics to food, wine, books, film and the arts. Afternoons covers everything from the humorous to the profound, taking in news of the day and inspirational stories from everyday people. Bernadette fell in love with radio at the age of seven. It was the start of the Christmas holidays and her little sister Carmel climbed up to smell a rose on top of the TV, bringing the old black and white set tumbling down. Carmel was OK – the TV never worked again. Radio reigned supreme that summer in the Young household. While radio was her first love, TV would provide her first job. Bernadette started as a journalist on regional television in Queensland. After living in Rockhampton, Townsville, Cairns, Toowoomba and the Gold Coast, Sydney would be her next stop. Bernadette started working for the ABC in 2000 when she snuck her way into radio and realised a dream, working for Triple J as a reporter and eventually as Breakfast newsreader. She gave it all up to live in the desert, chasing another dream – her own radio show. After a year as the Mornings Presenter in Alice Springs, she scored her best gig to date as presenter of the 720 ABC Perth Afternoons show.
